Luisa Diaz Chamorro (b. 1970, Málaga, Spain) is a figurative painter based in Rivoli, near Turin, Italy. She discovered a passion for drawing and painting as a child, making portraits of family and friends from life from the age of ten.
At fifteen she began her training under portrait painter Antonio Montiel, in the Pasaje Chinitas in Málaga, where she learned oil painting and figure study from life. She went on to study technical drawing and, in 1994, graduated in Mechanical Engineering — the same year she moved to Turin for work. Painting remained a constant throughout this period; she continued to study at art schools in every city she lived in, including Málaga, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and Turin.
From 2012 she began spending time in the Chisone Valley, in the Piedmontese Alps, where she painted more intensively, working across supports such as stone and wood and creating murals; she later opened a studio in Usseaux. In 2017 she discovered watercolor, a technique she has continued to develop under master painters in Italy and abroad.
In 2019 she committed fully to art as a professional practice, focusing on oil, watercolor and soft pastel, and opened a second studio in Rivoli. She continues to paint en plein air, and also leads...
In my paintings I try to convey the beauty within every subject — the setting, the gaze, the expression. I am always searching for myself, and for a way to communicate something true. Recurring themes in my work are women and children, set within landscapes; my paintings are an image of my soul.
Art has always felt innate to me. I began painting by instinct, simply because I loved it — drawing everywhere, copying what I saw around me. When my work required me to travel often, I drew on the plane, because it helped me forget my fear of flying.
Beyond drawing, my preferred techniques are oil and watercolor. Watercolor in particular fascinates me: watching the colors merge directly on wet paper, forming nuances and imperfections that can be turned into something beautiful. It has made me a better painter in every other medium as well.
In portraits, I try to convey a feeling, an expression. When I paint, I find my peace — and I try to pass it on.
