David Maiefski is a sculptor based in the mist-laden forests of the Pacific Northwest, where he crafts stark yet lyrical works from cast concrete. Rooted in the raw geometry of Brutalism, his sculptures explore the tension between mass and negative space, permanence and erosion.
Drawing inspiration from moss-covered cliffs, tide-worn pilings, and the region’s industrial history, Johnson pours, carves, and sands each piece by hand, often incorporating subtle surface textures that echo rain, stone, and timber. His practice balances disciplined form-making with the unpredictable character of curing cement, allowing cracks, air pockets, and weathering to become part of the story.
Through these monolithic objects, Maiefski invites viewers to consider how architecture, landscape, and memory shape one another. His work has become a quiet homage to the Pacific Northwest’s shifting light and rugged topography — a meditation on strength, stillness, and the beauty of unfinished edges.
