Surien Fourie

Originally from South Africa, I have lived in the Canadian prairies for over 20 years, where the vast landscapes and open skies continue to influence my artistic practice. My work is rooted in abstract expressionism and mixed media, drawing on emotion as the foundation of my creative process. I paint not from a fixed image, but from a feeling—loss, love, hope, anger—transforming them into layered textures, shapes, and colours.

Since 2018, I’ve been teaching visual arts at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, where my students’ creativity inspires me to keep learning and evolving. I hold a Therapeutic Art Certification (2020) and completed the Mastery Program in Painting at the Milan Art Institute (2022). From my rural Manitoba studio, I create work that invites viewers to connect inward, reflecting on their own emotional landscapes. My goal as an artist is to spark moments of recognition and healing, where a brushstroke or gesture becomes a mirror of the soul.
