K.Q. Nemtenner is an artist who pays exorbitant rent in Pacific Grove, California.
He studied under the renowned photorealist painter Robert Bechtle at San Francisco State University, where he emerged with a Bachelor of Arts in drawing and painting.
His education took an unusual turn at Cal State Long Beach, where he earned a certificate in Scientific Illustration. There, he spent countless hours dissecting and drawing from human cadavers, invertebrates and birds. Later, at Monterey Peninsula College, he returned to the lab for more cadaver work while studying sculpture, building a foundation of knowledge that few artists can claim.
Between academic pursuits, Nemtenner honed his craft in the commercial art trenches, winning prizes as a display artist in Anaheim, then creating large-scale airbrush paintings in San Francisco.
His technical approach varies by painting, borrowing from the old masters. Whether glazing in the manner recommended by Titian, or using very thinned down paint like Renoir, Nemtenner treats each canvas as an experiment in how centuries of technique can serve a contemporary vision.
What emerges is work that refuses to apologize for its subject matter or its painstaking execution; works that demand the same attention from viewers that Nemtenner invests in creating them.
