Ji Xia, known as Ma Xia, was born in 1960 in Nantong City, Jiangsu Province, China.
With the influence of the family, he learned painting and calligraphy from his father at a very early age, as well as being influenced by many other artists. In 1980s, he pursued study at Central Academy of Arts. He then worked at Nantong Arts Research Institute, specializing in painting creations.
He has visited Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan and Guizhou on many occasions to conduct sketching. He has participated in the nation's Tibet-support Project"”the design work for the decoration of key projects, for which he won the "Top Artist Award" granted by UNESCO, and was granted "Special Contribution Award" issued by the State Council of People's Republic of China. His works of painting and art designs have won gold, silver and bronze medals on many art exhibitions and have been collected by many art galleries and collectors at home and abroad.
In 1990s, he retired to a life of seclusion on the bank of Wenfeng Futu in Nantong. Distancing himself from the worldly affairs, he lost himself in the appreciation and creation of painting and bamboo artworks.
