Melanie Relf

I am a London-based conceptual artist with a background in architecture, deeply inspired by the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and tactile quality of the Arts & Crafts movement. My work is informed by these principles, combined with a passion for exploring human resilience and challenging societal norms.
Growing up in a coastal village in Kent, with views of the French coastline, I developed a strong sense of being European. Architecture became my gateway to the world, taking me across the UK and internationally to places like Dubai, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and living for a time in both Qatar and Morocco with my young family. These experiences profoundly shaped my worldview, particularly as I specialized in healthcare design, one of the most highly regulated sectors of architecture - a discipline that both challenges and fascinates me.
Despite my success in architecture, the pull towards a more primal, raw form of creation has been ever-present. Art became a way to process the social injustices I witnessed throughout my travels - poverty, domestic violence, and inequality were often visible and deeply felt.
