Jane Ma

I am Jane M. (Jian Ma), a contemporary oil painter based in China. My paintings explore memory, light, and the emotional presence of space through simplified architectural forms, expansive colour fields, and carefully balanced areas of stillness.

My ongoing body of work, The Geometry of Silence, brings together interconnected series including Rooms of Light, Fragments, The Shape of Stillness, and Fragments Monument. Each approaches the relationship between space and emotion from a different perspective.

A recurring motif is a luminous threshold—a narrow passage of light leading into memory. Rather than depicting a specific place, I use openings, shadows, and distances to suggest the feeling of somewhere remembered, imagined, or left behind.

Working in oils, I balance restrained compositions with visible brushwork and subtle shifts in colour and texture. I invite viewers to pause and bring their own memories to these quiet spaces.
