Cui Dayue

My artistic practice is rooted in the Eastern philosophical concept of “seeing the self, seeing heaven and earth, and seeing all living beings.” Through painting, I explore the relationship between individual experience and broader existence, focusing on how emotion and consciousness are held within nature and how connections between humans, the natural world, and other beings are formed.

I began drawing at the age of four and was first exposed to traditional Chinese painting, developing an early sensitivity to brushwork, negative space, and poetic atmosphere. Later, through formal training in Western painting, I gradually formed a hybrid visual language in which Eastern introspection and Western formal structures intersect and coexist.

Growing up within a Chinese cultural context, traditional narratives surrounding nature, spirituality, and non-human beings—such as the cultural imagination shaped by The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing)—together with Western notions of fairies and elemental spirits, have subtly informed my intuitive understanding of non-figurative life forms. These presences do not appear as defined characters, but as entities that exist between biology, consciousness, and the spiritual realm.
