Ivan Velkov (1930–2008) is regarded as one of the most eminent figures of modern Macedonian painting. A painter and university professor, he belonged to the post-war generation of artists who played a decisive role in shaping the development of Macedonian art during the 1960s, a period widely described by art historians as a time of renewal and artistic transformation.
Velkov’s importance lies in his restless investigative spirit and his ability to introduce new visual languages to the local art scene, while simultaneously engaging with major movements of international modernism. His oeuvre cannot be confined to a single stylistic definition. Instead, it unfolds through a rich spectrum of expressionist, cubist-constructivist, geometric, and lyrical abstract approaches, each adopted and transformed through his own distinct visual discourse.
Following early expressionist explorations, Velkov progressively moved toward post-cubism, abstraction, surrealist sensibilities, and ultimately toward informel and lyrical abstraction. Ivan Velkov graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he received a rigorous academic foundation that initially informed his expressionist phase. This formal training became the basis from which he later developed a highly independent artistic language, enabling his transition toward abstraction, post-cubist structures, surrealist atmospheres, and informel painting.
Alongside his artistic practice, Velkov was also active as a university professor, contributing significantly to the education and formation of younger generations of artists and to the advancement of modern art discourse in Macedonia.
On March 4, 2021, the National Gallery of North Macedonia presented the retrospective exhibition “Ivan Velkov, 90 Years Since Birth” at Čifte Hammam in Skopje. The exhibition featured approximately 90 works spanning all creative phases of Ivan Velkov’s career, drawn from major institutional collections including the National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje, regional museums and conservation institutes, the Velkov family collection, and numerous private collectors. This comprehensive presentation reaffirmed Velkov’s status as one of the most significant Macedonian modernists and highlighted his decisive contribution to the development of post-war Macedonian painting, particularly during the transformative 1960s.
