Fabio Bonini

Fabio Bonini (b. 1965) is an Italian painter whose practice has been rooted in drawing and painting since childhood. He graduated as Maestro d’Arte from the Istituto Artistico P. Toschi in Parma.

Before fully committing to his own work, Bonini spent many years in art restoration and the antiques trade, working on churches and historic buildings. This background fostered a strong sensitivity to materials, surfaces and the visible effects of time—concerns that remain central to his painting.

He works mainly with oil, favouring direct, physical procedures in which images appear through erosion, instability and controlled loss rather than refinement. Other media—enamel, acrylic, charcoal, ink—have informed his approach, but oil is the medium in which his language is most concentrated.

His recent paintings focus on the female body not as an object of depiction, but as a field of tension between form and dissolution. Gesture, accident and the resistance of matter play a key role, leaving the process exposed and refusing narrative or illustrative closure.

Bonini does not work in fixed series. Each painting is conceived as a singular event: an open structure where the image holds its presence without explanation.
