Carolina Garza

My work exists at the intersection of classical heritage and contemporary inquiry. Having been formed within a traditional and conservative environment, my artistic practice serves as a space to analytically examine the values and ideals that have historically defined the 'proper' path for us humans. I use the language of art to question the weight of inherited traditions and the rigid social structures that, despite the passage of time, still seek to define our roles today.

In this series, I establish a dialogue between the rigorous standards of old-world academic painting and the fluid, often chaotic reality of the 21st century. By reimagining icons like the Mona Lisa or David, I am not only revisiting art history but also scrutinizing the very concept of 'perfection' that these works represent. I am fascinated by the parallel between the strict, uncompromising rules of the classical Academy and the equally demanding expectations placed upon women in modern society—to be still, to be graceful, and to conform to an idealized image.
