William Lindemann

I grew up along the forested dunes of the western Lake Michigan shore. Home was not a place where art was encouraged. Creative interests were seen as impractical, so I learned early to keep them to myself. Imagination became private; something I carried quietly through wandering and observation.

Art came into my life in the final year of high school. I needed an elective and ended up in an art class. For one semester, I drew, painted and worked with clay freely and without judgment. That experience stayed with me, even though it wasn’t supported or valued at home.

After graduation, I worked a series of factory jobs and felt increasingly disconnected from any real sense of direction. A chance meeting with a professional artist led me to help with late-night Raku firings. The heat, energy, and unpredictability of the process made a strong impression. When I learned that art could actually be studied, I realized it was something I had to pursue seriously.

I worked nights and took odd jobs to put myself through school, eventually earning my undergraduate degree with honors and then a Master of Arts. The studio became a place where I felt grounded. I learned by showing up every day and staying with the work.

The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 1979 through 1981, graduating with a MA in Studio Arts and concentrations in mixed media sculpture and drawing.
