Jonathan Cowan

Art has always been part of my life. I grew up on Vancouver Island, BC Canada. I was developmentally delayed as a child. I couldn't speak or put a simple stick figure together until the first grade. One of my first teachers showed compassion on me and encouraged me to draw, the rest they say is history. Art became a comfort and a joy.
As an adult I have lived in BC, Alberta, Georgia, Missouri, New Brunswick and now southern Ontario. My wife of 31 years patiently puts up with art supplies all over the house. Actually she and our 4 children are my biggest fans.
I paint mainly from experiences or family events and outings. I love the outdoors and find much of my subject material on hikes, fishing or hunting trips.
As a minister I do on occasion paint religious themed paintings.
I paint mainly acrylic and oil. I prefer thicker applications of paint with brushstrokes. I want to capture not just the moment but through the paint and brushstrokes the emotion.

For formal education I have an MDiv from Covenant Seminary, St. Louis, MO. For art I took all I could in school and figure drawing in my first year of college. I am mostly self taught when it comes to painting. I have been involved in art all my life at some level. In Georgia I taught art at a small private school along with other subjects.
