ABOUT
EDUCATION
RECOGNITION

Anna Lisa Leal is a border-born and raised Texan and a contemporary botanical artist specializing in xeric plants from West Texas, the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts, and the broader American Southwest. Working primarily in the dry medium of soft pastel—a material who’s solid and dusty earth bound nature mirrors the botanicals she depicts—she creates work that is both intimate and elemental.
Raised in Laredo on the Texas–Mexico border, Leal descends from Canary Islanders who settled in South Texas in 1731. She grew up drawing beneath the tangerine trees in her backyard and later discovered a strong aptitude for botany, eventually teaching biology labs during college. A 2013 pastel workshop ignited her devotion to the medium and set her on a path of developing her own techniques, including preparing her own surfaces.
Her work is deeply inspired by the xeric botanicals—especially agave, whose forms, markings, and life cycle resonate with her sense of place and heritage. She now lives and works in the Austin Hill Country near the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, continuing to create from the landscapes that shaped her.

Leal is a Masters Circle artist with the International Association of Pastel Societies, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico, and Associate with Distinction member of American Women Artists.
