Sarmite Makarova

A painter based in Latvia, whose work explores the fragile relationship between time, perception, and the natural environment. Although she began painting in 2020, her practice took on deeper significance following a life-altering confrontation with her own mortality, which profoundly reshaped her awareness of time, not as something abstract or infinite, but as a finite and deeply personal dimension. This experience became the foundation of her artistic direction, leading her to fully commit to painting in 2023 as a means of examining presence, impermanence, and the suspended moments that exist between what is seen and what is felt.
Working primarily in oil, creates atmospheric compositions that often depict forests, seasonal transitions, and natural thresholds. Paintings seek to capture the fleeting impulse in which time appears to pause and ordinary reality becomes momentarily transformed.
Drawing inspiration from nature and its cyclical rhythms, her work reflects a quiet attentiveness to change, stillness, and the unseen forces that shape human perception.
