Barkan Bashir

I was born into art. My father, also an abstract painter, was the reason I entered the realm of art. At an young age I learned that art is not something you choose, it is something you discover about yourself over time.

My works are projections of my insights and thoughts of different things. Death, the afterlife, the ocean, heaven and hell, ancient ruins and fossils, the lost rhythms of civilizations long gone — these are not just subjects, they are questions I live with. Each painting is an attempt to sit with those questions honestly.

I believe art is one of the few things in this world that gives us something nothing else can. It makes us humble. It expands what we are able to imagine. It draws us closer to creation itself, and through that, to the creator. Art may take everything from the artist — time, comfort, certainty — but in return it offers the rarest gift: a sense of purpose.

I am still discovering what that purpose is. And the paintings are how I search.
