Francesco Lomonaco

Born in Bari in 1984, lives and works in Matera, Italy

Visual artist, collage artist, draftsman of the fantastic, filmmaker, and documentary director. His work explores the relationship between image, geometry, and lived space, with attention to material stratification and light as an active element of composition. Among his recognitions: Fondazione Southeritage (Guggenheim Prize for Enterprise & Culture), World Urban Forum 7 in Medellín, Museo del Presente in Milan, Matera European Capital of Culture 2019.

LOMO's work unfolds primarily on paper, through series sharing a common ground: the relationship between image, geometry, and the construction of space — both real and imagined. His background as a draftsman of the fantastic, filmmaker, and documentary director shapes a practice where the real and the imaginary are never fully separated. The roots run deep into the symbolic landscape of Basilicata: the Sassi of Matera, a cave-dwelling civilization that transformed necessity into beauty, stone into shelter, darkness into architecture. That stratification of material, time, and reflected light returns as an invisible but constant signature.
