Jaideep Mathur

Art and science inform and influence each other in the life of Jaideep Mathur.

Mathur's fascination with light and patterns-an enduring motif throughout his adult works-can be traced to the artist's early childhood where he used his grandmother's yarn to produce intricate forms of interconnected thread and watched as light streamed from the window into his constructions.

This early sense of wonder would follow him into his academic career as a plant cell biologist where, by working with fluorescent proteins, a striking similarity was revealed between his childhood creations and the dynamic structures from inside living cells. Now a faculty member at the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Jaideep works on unravelling the mysteries of sub-cellular interactions involved in shape development in plants.
