Shannon Carter is a painter and scholar based in London. Her current series, You Must Become, uses primary color as critical apparatus—red, yellow, and blue as the visual grammar of certainty and seduction—to ask how allegory organizes a people, and what remains when it breaks. Inspired by and departing from the destabilized geometry of Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), the work translates Expressionism's black-and-white estrangement into saturated color, enacting rather than depicting the delusion it examines. BEERS London gallery director Kurt Beers has described the series as having "a strong conceptual foundation" and "a consistent sense of unease that is highly effective." A Visiting Professor at King's College London, Carter holds that her scholarly and painting practices are in continuous conversation; her theoretical framework, rhetorical lenticularity, underpins both.
Ph.D., Rhetoric, Texas Woman's University, 2001 • M.A., English, University of North Texas, 1996 • B.A., English, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi
