Cedric Surmin

I am Shoodrik, a French sculptor based on the Île de Ré. I create one-of-a-kind animal sculptures from recycled metal, mechanical parts and fragments diverted from their original purpose. Many of these elements come from old bicycles found on the island, where cycling is an integral part of the landscape and everyday life.

My work is guided by an instinctive approach to materials. Without following a fixed plan, I select and assemble each element according to its shape, balance and the role it can play within the sculpture. My aim is not simply to depict an animal, but to capture its presence, character and energy.

Each sculpture is shaped, welded and patinated by hand in my studio. My work is now held in private collections in France and internationally.

I am a fully self-taught artist. I developed my practice through direct experimentation with metal, welding and assemblage. Over the years, I also taught myself how to work with clay and create moulds, which now serve as the starting point for some of my sculptures before they are translated into metal. My education has taken place in the studio, through research, experimentation and continuous practice.
