Dimitar Enev or Dimi, as he prefers to be called was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1950. Across five decades he has worked at the meeting point of contemporary art, cinema and print media: as a scenographer, a caricaturist, an editorial artist, and throughout it all, a maker of collage.
An academic researcher and published author on design history, he brings a historian's eye and a craftsman's discipline to every image. His studio practice takes its formal language from the avant-garde expressive surrealism, Dada and abstraction and works it through complex collage and mixed media on paper and cardboard.
Each piece is built by cutting, layering and recombining fragments that arrive carrying their own histories are set against one another until a new reading emerges. The result is work that refuses a single, settled narrative and asks the viewer to assemble meaning rather than simply receive it.

Dimitar Enev holds a Ph.D. in Arts (2012) from the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, where he is Professor of Graphic Design and currently Guest Lecturer in the Department of Cinema, Advertising and Showbusiness. His training began in Romania, at the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, today the National University of Arts, where he earned a Master's Degree in TV and Film Scenography in 1976. Teaching and research have run alongside his studio practice ever since, each one feeding the other.
