EDUCATION
Mario Dionisi was born in L’Aquila, Italy, on September 9, 1939.
He is a painter, sculptor, and restorer of antique paintings, with a background spanning several disciplines within the visual arts.
In 1954, he began his artistic training as an apprentice decorator in Rome. In 1959, he attended a school specializing in the restoration of antique art in Florence, and in 1961 he pursued studies in modern painting and sculpture in Zurich.
His artistic practice encompasses abstract, figurative, and conceptual painting, exploring social themes as well as the search for meaning, symbolism, and metaphor. His works are predominantly created using acrylic paint and sand on wooden panels and canvas, resulting in distinctive surfaces rich in texture and material presence.
His sculptural practice is characterized by semi-flat, highly tactile forms featuring graffiti-like markings, cuts, incisions, and raised elements. These works can be described as “surface sculptures,” created primarily with materials such as wood, sand, and pigments.
In other sculptural works, Dionisi explores spherical and disc-shaped forms made from forged and wrought iron.
