Ulyana Sokolova was born in Moscow in 1975 into an artistic family. She began studying academic drawing at the age of eight under the guidance of her father, artist Konstantin Sokolov.
In 1993, she entered the Icon Painting School at the Moscow Theological Academy in Sergiev Posad, where she received rigorous training in drawing, painting, composition, and the traditional techniques of icon painting. She completed the four-year program in 1997, qualifying as an icon painter. Her diploma work was an icon of Saint Nicholas.
Her training in icon painting introduced her to the distinctive techniques and visual language of Old Russian painting, enriching the academic foundation she had already developed and broadening her technical and artistic vocabulary.
She currently lives and works in Yerevan, Armenia. Her paintings explore the city beyond its familiar landmarks, focusing instead on its quieter and less obvious beauty — old houses and courtyards, rooftops, streets, construction sites, and the visual contrasts of a city in constant transformation. For Sokolova, the city is not simply a setting but a living presence, with its own appearance, peculiarities, and character.
Her works have been exhibited in Yerevan and are held in private...
