Gemma O'Malley

I am a Scottish contemporary artist inspired by the beauty, scale and ever-changing light of the landscape around me. Living in the Scottish countryside, I am surrounded by nature, and it has become an integral part of both my life and my work.

My connection with nature began in childhood. I have always found that standing beneath a vast sky, looking across mountains or watching the sea has a way of putting life into perspective. That feeling continues to influence my work today.

Through expressive brushwork, colour and texture, I explore the relationship between light, water and landscape, seeking to capture not simply how a place looks, but how it feels to stand within it.

My work is a celebration of Scotland's wild beauty and the sense of peace, strength and perspective that I find there. I hope my paintings offer viewers a moment of escape—a chance to pause, breathe and feel connected to something bigger than themselves.

Education

I am a self-taught artist, having developed my practice independently through experimentation, observation and a deep personal connection with the natural world. Rather than following a formal art education, I have allowed my curiosity and instinct to guide my artistic journey, continually exploring colour, texture, light and movement through painting.

My approach has evolved through practice and experimentation, with the Scottish landscape providing an ongoing source of inspiration. Being self-taught has given me the freedom to develop an intuitive and personal style, focused on capturing the feeling and atmosphere of a place rather than simply depicting it.
