I'm Alexandre, a self-taught painter from Brazil, and I sign my work LAR. It stands for Luciana, Alexandre, and Roots, my partner, me, and our dog. In Portuguese, lar also means "home." That's what I try to paint: the feeling of belonging.
I never studied art formally. I learned by painting, by studying the artists I love, and by making a lot of mistakes. Cubism, Art Déco, and Brazilian Modernism shaped my language. I'm thinking of Di Cavalcanti, Tarsila, Léger, Sonia Delaunay, and Stuart Davis. I break figures and animals into flat geometric pieces and build them with gold, copper, and lots of color. Dancers, couples, macaws, jaguars, and birds sit at the center. Around them, little fragments float on their own and give the painting its rhythm.
I also have a more playful, abstract side, inspired by Pollock. I use masking tape to hold the chaos of splatter inside geometric blocks, and I hide words and faces in the paint. For me it's about concealment and revelation: you have to look twice to find what's hidden.
Lately I've been painting on things that already had a life, like old cutting boards and bottles, and giving them a new one.
Color is my language, and I paint to bring joy, warmth, and a little bit of home into any space.
