Subjectivity is an important factor of my work, a formal approach to abstract painting that demonstrates gesture and colour by my interest in ornamentation. The Compositions of my work are determined by contrasting colours and a strong linear approach to mark making. This linier aspect can either be self conscious (as in drawing) or through the process of drips. This combination makes a dynamic surface, how the paint is applied meticulously with small brushes is important, adding areas of intense detail, I try to use colour to push and pull the space in several directions.
I use water based spray paint and acrylic paints to keep these abstract spaces rhythmic and busy creating a surge of energy throughout the piece with a blush of bright colours. The stillness of some areas plays off the chaos of other areas. At the moment, as each work evolves, it influences the next piece and develops the series further. I like to think each painting demonstrates personality; this is why I have named each piece as if a human character.
