Artist statement #2
Far too much of the world is ablaze, flooded, and overcrowded. As a respite, the images I portray are of those fertile places on Earth where gardens still thrive. Having grown up in the country, I now live in New York City with my scientist (PhD, MD) husband. I share his concerns for the threats to our climate, and so I’ve especially focused on painting views of the world’s natural beauty. Most recently, those pictures reflect the luscious colors of Provence and the French Riviera. At home, we have a garden (yes, in New York City) where I spend many afternoons painting watercolors of our small jungle.
I’ve travelled often and spent a fair bit of time in the Middle East and Africa, where I’ve learned the Arabic phrase “What is your color?” meaning “How are you feeling?”. As I’ve toted my portable easel or watercolor kit to create a visual journal wherever I go, my paintings are generally done in oil, often preceded by watercolor sketches. Form supports color, and I am particularly driven by color, especially in brilliant sunlight.
