RECOGNITION

Philip S. Potter began his studio practice in 2001, teaching stone-carving to students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, and has maintained an active practice ever since. He holds a degree in sculpture from Loughborough College of Art and Design (1995), a Masters of Arts with distinction from Birmingham City University, and a PgCert in Research from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD). He is an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (ARBSA).

With over twenty-five years of experience as a sculptor, teacher, and researcher, Philip now works nationwide from his Midlands base — exhibiting widely, accepting commissions, and delivering public workshops in stone sculpture. His work has been collected internationally, with large-scale pieces shipped to collectors in the United States.

His practice focuses on stone and form. He utilises stone for its resistance, durability and relationship to culture, landscape and body, drawing inspiration from natural and synthetic forms and finding consonances where form follows function — questioning our place in built and natural environments, and disrupting the binary between nature-as-self and nature-as-object.
