Melba treats painting as a visual homage to the poetry living in the figure. Her practice grows from a vivid inner world that craves color, seeks meaning, and contends with form. Drawn from a multi-cultural background and a suite of lived experiences, her paintings fuse memory, sensation, and gesture into dynamic ensembles. Working in her Harvard, MA studio and within local artist workshops, she continually expands her vocabulary through dialogue with peers and mentors. Her work has been associated with neo-expressionism and abstract expressionism, signaling a commitment to bold emotion, mark-making, and the exploration of presence on canvas.
Melba has studied painting with Cynthia Packard, Lucy McNillis, Catherine Kehoe, Nancy McCarthy, Christopher Chippendale, David Andrus, Eric Bornstein (drawing), Shoeh Regna (sculptor), George Nick, Antonio Mafaldo, and Patricia Matamoros.
