Evgenia Saré

I work in oil on canvas according to the principles of the old Flemish and Italian masters – not out of nostalgia, but because these methods reveal the truth about matter and light in a way that nothing else can match: imprimatura, layered glazes, and progressive modelling.
The light in my paintings does not come from an external source. It is built up layer by layer, trapped within the very substance of the paint. The floral backgrounds thus emerge slowly, like memories. The faces are shaped without defined outlines, through imperceptible transitions between shadow and light.
The old masters had no shortcuts.
Neither do I.
