About Paul Dessau
Paul’s artistry consists of drawings, both graphite, and colored pencil, and, sometimes, magazine shred collages with an emphasis on the figure and portraits, often commissioned. Surrealist compositions dominate his work, and the subjects arise from free flow of consciousness. Usually, themes and statements can be read into the works, after the fact. A high priority of the artist is to instill thinking in the viewers, regardless of the conclusions arrived at by the viewer. He has enjoyed doing artwork since his childhood in Carmichael, California. Departing from the modern trend toward mechanical and electronic methods of art production, Paul works “gadget-free,” beginning with freehand drawings, both from both life and photographs. No tracing, or other shortcuts are used.
He also builds pipe organs, and in the past, built violins. He has taken art classes as general education, in college, has had instruction from individual master artists, and has bachelors and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering.
