Jocelyn Chemel is a Boston based mixed media artist. Having been a decorative painting teacher for many years she learned layering techniques and the use of different mediums. She likes to use digital photography, collage, drawing and printing, sometimes all together.
Having been born in South Africa and growing up during apartheid she is sensitive to what lies beneath and what is not spoken. Using layering in her art is a way to peek into the world below and often uses glitter, pearls, nail polish to draw attention to ugly, hard subjects.
More recently her art has shifted to include socially engaged art. Her interest in the political, economic and planetary shifts borne out by changing global governments has informed her art as well as a love of textiles, patterns and shapes in nature.
Jocelyn has studied art for more than 20 years through the courses offered by the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum School in Boston. As well as attending studio classes for 10 years.
