Agata Derda was born in Poland in the 80s as a second of four siblings in a working class family. She started her art education as a child in a local youth centre and continued up to 19 years of age in High School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland. A Few years after finishing high school, Derda immigrated to Ireland where she undertook BFA in Printmaking in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Derda moved to Edmonton, Canada in 2011 to start MFA at the University of Alberta. She has shown her work in several solo shows in Canada and national and international group shows (China, the United States and Europe). Currently lives and works exclusively on her art practice in Toronto.
In 2018 Derda was awarded Special Award of the Rector of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin at the International Print Triennial in Krakow, Poland and Nick Novak Fellowship from Open Studio Artists Run Center for Printmakers in Toronto.
Derda’s artistic interest in the dark side of human condition relates to her experience growing in a country damaged by a difficult history, especially the World War II and Communism.
