Agnes Domke

Agnes Domke is a Berlin-based artist and writer whose work explores the presence of energy in visual form. Her paintings are conceived as spaces that not only depict energy, but actively generate it—offering the viewer a subtle sense of vitality, intensity, and inner movement.

Inspired by Eastern and Central European folk traditions, particularly embroidery and traditional dress, her work draws on their expressive strength, symbolic richness, and bold, unexpected colour combinations. Domke approaches colour intuitively and experimentally, developing layered compositions with a strong sense of rhythm and chromatic tension.

Her floral forms are rooted in historical contexts in which such motifs were believed to hold protective and even magical qualities, often connected to the human body and its vitality. Echoing this origin, her paintings seek to carry a sense of protection, sensuality, and life force into contemporary spaces.

Through the use of metallic pigments, the surfaces subtly shift with light and movement, creating a dynamic visual experience that changes as the viewer passes by. The works often interact harmoniously with patterned interiors, resembling fragments of a living, breathing surface within the space.
