A lively spirit, Antonella Aimi was born in Alessandria, Italy, on 22 April 1967, under the sign of Taurus, which helped nurture from an early age a volcanic creativity that defines both her work and her life.
Antonella Aimi’s first artistic successes date back to March 1975, at the age of 8, when she took first place in the children’s drawing exhibition and competition organised by the City of Alessandria at the Palazzo della Cultura.
In 1980, at the age of 13, she was given paints, brushes and a palette, which led to her first oil painting, a clownfish among sea anemones, remarkably rich in nuances and technical virtuosity such as lights within shadow.
Her constant evolutionary research was finally realised through numerous visits to major museums in Italy, Europe and many other countries. There, the careful observation of her 2 colleagues, contemporary and otherwise, became a constant source of comparison, research and discipline, while she always kept that necessary distance from the model: a mere stage in an unstoppable apprenticeship, never imitative but free and playful.
Drawing on her vast experience, she also opened a painting studio in Turin together with three other artists, on the corner of Via Napione and Via degli Art...
While pursuing technical studies, she had the opportunity to deepen her knowledge of drawing, perspective and form, completing secondary school with excellent results.
Her aesthetic education continued through the careful observation of the masters of classical painting, such as Leonardo da Vinci: reading his legacy, the timeless “Treatise on Painting”, she recognised herself in his idea of art as a mantle that pervades every aspect of life. The study of the great painters, such as Caravaggio, to whom we owe the introduction of strong chiaroscuro, Frans Hals, an exceptional portraitist, and the great Rembrandt, who was
himself influenced by Italian painting although he never set foot in Italy, shaped Antonella Aimi’s style in those years. It also became a constant leitmotiv of her work, imbued with the joyful irony with which she interprets the art of the past, using her talent to transform
canons and pictorial motifs that had lost their vitality.
Throughout a painting career spanning about forty years, Antonella Aimi has been invited to take part in numerous exhibitions organised by the Municipality of Alessandria, as well as in group and solo shows in Milan, Florence, Venice, Rome and Turin. Her oil paintings and watercolours have also been featured in art fairs and exhibition-markets across Italy and abroad, where she was invited by several art galleries that recognised the expressive quality and consistency of her work. These experiences have allowed her to share her artistic vision with a wide and diverse audience, building lasting relationships with collectors, curators and fellow artists.
