Alban Lanore (born in 1966 in Paris) is a self-taught French sculptor whose work forms a powerful dialogue between the organic and the geometric. Initially inspired by the raw forms of nature discovered during his travels, he gradually evolved his practice toward a rigorous abstraction. His work is characterized by the use of charred wood, a technique that creates a striking contrast between polished surfaces and carbonized textures, as well as by a quest for formal and conceptual balance. Although he deliberately works away from the art world from his residence in Touraine, Alban Lanore has succeeded in establishing a strong presence on the contemporary art market. His works are represented by renowned international galleries and are regularly exhibited at major art fairs, attesting to the critical and commercial recognition of his distinctive approach.
His artistic path took root not in an institution, but in his direct experiences and travels. In 1991, he founded a plant-based decorative design company, an activity that took him to all four corners of the globe. These journeys particularly to the forests of Gabon and Central America proved revelatory. He became fascinated by “the extraordinary diversity of forms created by nature,” a fascination that deeply permeated his early work and gave rise to his vocation as a sculptor. His engagement with raw material is profoundly ethical and reflects his respect for the natural environment. He is notably accustomed to collecting “logging waste” or dead wood from Amazonian forests.
A decisive encounter was with Frans Krajcberg, the Brazilian sculptor and “ardent defender of the preservation of nature.” Krajcberg, co-author of the *Manifesto of Integral Naturalism* with Pierre Restany, encouraged Lanore along his path. This manifesto advocates a vision of art as a symbiosis with nature—an approach that resonated strongly with Lanore’s commitment to using natural materials and transforming them in a respectful manner.
