Alex Ilin

Being born in a small town on the coast of Barents Sea in the north of Russia, I have always felt a close connection to the elements water, wind, air and northern skies and a deep love for the sea. The colors of skies, clouds, water and light keep fascinating me and give me strength and power.
My current collection deals with the relationship between land and sea, whether hostile or dependent, and the delicate balance of one’s need for the other. Using colors, shapes, and texture over multiple layers, I explore the comfort and animosity of a place revisited or newly imagined, continuously experimenting with visual depth, and incorporating a certain emotion as a map spills from mind to the canvas.
