Alison Litherland

My practice can be summed up as 'put paint on canvas, see what happens'. Inspired by remote empty spaces, the transitions between land, sea and the sky, wild weather, distant hills, lost industrial landscapes and the whirling of sea birds in flight, I aim to create a feeling of yearning for the place that is not quite seen. The paint is loosely applied; colour is used intuitively; and the sense of place is shifting and uncertain, such that the viewer is left wondering what is real, what is solid, and what is merely air or illusion.
