My art looks at the intersection of architecture, nature and us. Drawing on observation, memory and imagination, I compose images of buildings and landscapes that are recognizable, but not real – except for the maps integrated in the paintings, which imbues them with a sense of place. I aim to capture how we may feel connected to a place, not in a nostalgic way necessarily, but how we as human beings are connected (or not) to our environment, nature and the rest of the world. What is the impact of our choices? Where do we experience beauty? How do our needs interact with nature’s needs?
In my series of the past few years I repurpose old maps, add paint, and cut them up to build architectural compositions. The effect is an intriguing image both close-up and at a distance. The works look like paintings, but are built with pieces of paper, and are varnished to protect the colours.
I also work on commission, incorporating your personal maps and/or depicting architecture that is special to you.
