I never start with a figure.
I start with chaos.
Color, texture, layers — paint going where it wants to go. I build something abstract until it feels balanced. Until it breathes. Then I start looking.
And every time — every single time — there are figures already in there. Waiting. A mother and child. Two women. A bond between people I didn't consciously place. The subconscious painted them while I was busy with the composition. That's the only way I know how to work. Abstract first. Figure second. Let the painting tell me what it's about.
I've been doing this for years, in a studio in the north of the Netherlands. The work hangs in private homes and corporate collections. People tell me they find something new in it every time they look. That's everything I'm after.
Four years artichoke in abstract painting.
Past exhibitions in a.o Amsterdam, The Hague, Philadelphia, Antwerp.
