Ariane Laezza

Beauty; a concept that differs between
cultures, class and one that changes over
time. the one constant is that women have
always been the ones held to its arbitrary
standards and subject to the omnipresent male gaze. Nothing exemplifies this more than the iconic Barbie Doll.

Through this series of barbie portraits I
strive to capture a feeling of quiet
resignation from these silent, plastic
subjects while also placing focus on their
unique looks and differing personalities.

As a woman who has worked in the modelling
industry on both sides of the camera, I have
often struggled with male-driven, pre-determined
standards of beauty. through my portraits I
attempt to highlight my subjects' uniqueness
and natural beauty in a simple and honest
manner - as seen from a female perspective.
