Luxury and Leisure series

I started by doing this series of artworks on paper as spontaneous abstracts during the last few weeks of my pregnancy. I sat my heavy girth on the floor and painted with acrylics, inks and pastel onto watercolor. I was influenced by the drawings of Terry Winters. After I had my baby I decided they weren't complete without a character, and so I painted from 90's Southwestern magazines and catalogs. These works consider the relationship between abstraction and figuration in the most literal sense, using a simple juxtaposition of style. I feel that the colors and shapes reflect the mind and emotional state of the figure. I made these little paintings joyfully during my son's naps or when I painted with him in a sling.
