Mayan people of Guatemala and adjacent Mexico

These works celebrate the strength and dignity of the Mayan people, whose communities seek to preserve their pre-Columbian culture and practices against an encroaching modern world. The indigenous people of Guatemala survived European conquest and are offspring of survivors of Reagan's war against communist in support of a genocide launched by Dictator Rios Montt. Over 400 indigneous communities were destroyed in what is now politely referred to as the 36 year civil war. In the late 1970s, I and my family were botanizing along the Mexico, Guatemala border, A large refugee camp near Cometan, Chiapas was filled with Guatemalan Maya. We witnessed them flood across the border on bare feet to be welcomed by Mexico.
