Medusa

In the picture cycle "Medusa" (1 to 5), I refer in modern visual language to the painting "The Raft of the Medusa" by Theodore Gericault in the Louvre in Paris from 1819. The sinking of the French frigate Medusa in July 1816 became a scandal that stirred up the whole of Europe and created a modern myth. Only 15 out of 150 sailors survived on a raft after the ship sank because they were feeding on human flesh. The fate of the raft of the Medusa symbolised the restoration of the post-Napoleonic era and the failure of the political powers that were once again in power. The starting point of my interpretation is the failure of today's European political leaders in refugee policy and the countless drowned refugees in the Mediterranean.
