Mystics, becoming saints

Mystiques portrays Catholic saints as young, solitary figures, painted on bare, unpainted canvas rather than a finished background, an ascetic renunciation made visible in the material itself. Attributes are deliberately unclear or minimal, a staircase, a plain garment, a single gesture, leaving each figure caught in the moment of becoming a saint rather than already canonised by legend. Titled by first name alone, Sébastien, Joan, Vianney, Thérèse, the paintings ask what remains of sanctity once its iconography is almost forgotten.
