OEDIPUS - World of Horror
In this series of egg tempera paintings I bring attention to the shocking surreality of 'pre-determined fate' in Sophocles' Greek tragedy "Oedipus Rex" by way of my fascination with special make-up effects in 80s 'Splatter films' (e.g. 'Evil Dead', 'Demons', 'Day of the Dead') Thus bringing the often overlooked graphic violence buried in classic ancient literature to the forefront.
When we follow Oedipus' journey, from beginning to end, we become overwhelmed by the killing feeling of despair - eternal despair.
My objective in this work is to emphasize the horrifying atmosphere of pre-calculated doom and death. To unknowingly live a life which has been controlled by exterior forces and cannot be changed.
That is FATE.
