The Promise of Summer
After a long, dark and cold Vermont winter, the longing for summer is strong. We dream of the first bloom of the bleeding hearts and the scent of peonies. Sometimes we have to wait. Sometimes it rains. And then there is the sun! This series is about reckoning with our ultimate submission to the rhythm of nature.
As the pouring rain would abate, I would dash to the garden to collect new buds to print with. I played with those images of delayed summer, my flat paper and inks, and the series emerged. All summer I worked inside, waited for the first peony scent, hoped for ripened tomatoes, and reckoned with my ultimate submission to the power of nature.
