VIEW IN MY ROOM
This set of four analog grayscale geometric collages are 6 1/8 square inches on a piece of 8.5” x 11” heavy paper. (See below for descriptions of all four images.) (4 of 4) This fourth collage was constructed of pieces left over from the others and it’s the only one that incorporates segments of letters. The feeling of this piece is slightly more casual and relaxed, perhaps due to its randomness. The material of this set of pieces comes from advertising images of perfume company Chloe. Most viewers will not recognize the source; instead they will see rectangles and squares arranged along right angles. References to portraiture are clear, though, especially in collage pieces of hair, eyes, and facial parts. There is tension, a contained chaos, between the seemingly random arrangements and the order within the images, the X and Y axes. The mind wants to organize and make sense of incomplete information. Though I label this series black and white (grayscale), in fact the grays vary, depending on their origin; some have a warmer tone and others are more neutral or cooler in appearance. (1 of 4) The first piece in the series uses darker rectangles and squares. Flowing segments of hair alternate with facial parts. (2 of 4) The second work looks almost abstract, though a few rectangles allude to the human face. The overall tone moves from light gray to darker gray and white elements (hair). (3 of 4) In this third piece, eyes are the main element. They engage with the viewer, or do they? It’s impossible to say where the subject is really looking. (4 of 4) This fourth collage was constructed of pieces left over from the others and it’s the only one that incorporates segments of letters. The feeling of this piece is slightly more casual and relaxed, perhaps due to its randomness.

Andrea Cross is a Brooklyn, NY-based artist who specializes in works on paper. Statement: My mark making works are process oriented, intended to show a repetitive and meditative art making process that will encourage a similar contemplative reaction on the part of the viewer. Materials are simple: heavy paper, ink, watercolor, or a combination of both media. I am not interested in creating careful, identical marks. Instead, as part of the process I recognize that spontaneity gives the squares a visual energy. I view it as “chaotic minimalism,” a natural result of my work methods. As there is a repetition of the marks being painted, so is there a repetition to some of the grids and structures of the pieces. Superficially, the paintings might appear similar, but no two are alike, owing to the variations in color and application of the marks.
