ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Brexit?' - is a limited edition, 1 of 8. Palmer’s artworks of 2019 stemmed from an interest in present day British and American politics. The ongoing Brexit debates influenced the artwork ‘Brexit?’. These pieces are inspired by the layers of complexity surrounding Brexit, the confusion of mixed messages coming from politicians and the incessant talk of ticking clocks with the extension of article 50 nearing. In using optical illusion techniques, these artworks are purposefully difficult to look at, when the viewer diverges their eyes this can cause many layers to pop out but not simultaneously and obvious to the eye. Knitted with 100% silk and stretched onto canvas. Ready to hang.

Alice Palmer is a textile artist and designer who pushes the boundaries within art, design and production. Mediums used include knitting, embroidery and more recently, painting. Palmer draws inspiration from a diverse range of subjects: the illusionary and mathematical aesthetics of polyhedra and topology; the theories of Physics; the music of David Bowie and the style of Pop Art, to name but a few. Following completing a BA in Knitted Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art (1996-2000), her passion for furthering her knitting skills took her to London to study a Masters at the Royal College of Art (2005-07). At the Royal College of Art, Palmer specialised in Knitted Textiles, concentrating on developing unconventional ways of constructing knit. Palmer has shown at various exhibitions, her most recent being with The Other Art Fair in 2021, and was proudly picked by the Cynthia Corbett gallery for the Young Masters exhibition in 2014. She has also shown her sculpture at the Schwartz Gallery, Hackney Wick, for three consecutive years in a group show called Allotments. As well as creating several successful and innovative fashion collections shown in London, Paris, Tokyo and New York, Palmer has won numerous awards, one of which was the Textile Brand of the Year award at the Scottish Fashion Awards in 2013.
