ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Conceived as a balance of contrasts, this monochrome scene is centred around a horse statue atop a pyramid, as the people circulate inside a closed piazza. The architecture is lit by a huge light above, shining down like confetti. This analog, hand-scissored collage is glued directly onto wood board, and sprayed with gallery-quality archival varnish matt coating. A white oak wood box frame gives it a modern finish.

Creating otherworldly and surreal new environments, Clinton Gorst is a master of analogue collage. His works are created by combining dozens of meticulously cut pieces, to form new, alternate worlds. Using original pages from vintage books as resources means he only gets one chance to cut out these objects, but it also brings size limitations. So a recent development of custom-printing backgrounds has allowed for creating largescale works within his seamless photomontage process. Storytelling is an important part of his creations, and themes can include Brutalist or Modernist architecture, sci-fi and technology, to commenting on climate crisis, or portals to another dimension. This retro-futuristic vision of space and science, lead to his significant involvement in FUTURE, his first regional gallery showing at Casula Powerhouse in 2019 which was selected by ART GUIDE AUSTRALIA as one of the top 5 exhibitions to see nationwide. More recently he was asked to be part of BARE BONES at AIRspace projects, where the artists were asked to respond to the poems of JR Waen, and he returned to focus on people and humanity for these pieces – a theme that was prominent in his early Pop-style works from the ‘90s.
